Thumbnails in Magazine theme

thumbTHUMB

I have to admit, this was one of those things that I was glad to see I wasn’t the only one who had issues setting this up…..although I’m not terribly proud of it. It’s one of those things that when you see how easy it is, you realize how easy it is to be your own worst enemy. I was definitely making this harder than it is.

It’s not like uploading images for the featured content gallery- which is what I was doing. The magazine theme is set up to automatically re-size the images that you use in your post for thumbnails- so you don’t have to upload anything to your host. So, here’s how you do it. Time permitting I’ll do a video later today on this…

After you’ve written your post (or before-whichever way you prefer)-upload your image:

upload image

Then, once your image is uploaded- click the HTML button in the top right hand corner of your editor:

html

Now, you’re going to highlight the html for the image you just uploaded (and will use as a thumbnail)

highlight

The html that you’ve copied for your image is what you’re going to place in the value box in the custom field, using “thumb” as your key:

custom field

That’s it- now just add your tags, select your category and publish! The Magazine theme will resize it for you for home page featured boxes.

Hey thanks for this info I was having a hard time too lol I\’m glad I found easy info on how to do it. Now I am using the same theme you are using have u ever had difficulties when displaying ads or video? I embeded videos from my YouTube channel and people can\’t watch them from their iPhones, they work good if viewed from a computer but not from a mobile device! Any heads up on what might be happening?

    Thanks in advance!

Oh also what plugin are you using for your comments?! Please let me know!

    Thank you once again

    Hi,

Thanks for the comment. Just using the built in comments – but am going to start using Disqus.
Much easier for commenting across the web too!
    Have a great day

I really prefer using the Yet Another Photoblog (YAPB) plugin for this kind of stuff, it’s awesome! Hopefully there’s a way to integrate that with the Magazine theme — I’m not familiar with that theme.

    Hi Sara,

    Thanks for the comment.
I haven’t actually used that plugin before but am going to check it out. Most of the Studiopress themes come with the timthumb installed, which is why I just stick using that one. A lot of new themes are coming out with resizing built into it for thumbnails as well.
    Thanks again,
    Kim

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Btw.: Why isnt it in the Readme.txt from studiopress? :(

  6. Kim says:

    Hi Palloo,
That’s a good question! :-) They have such great support forums though….I can’t really complain.
    Thanks for the commen.

  9. Hey there Kim. Love this post.

I have a issue about this with a client\’s site…. How do I add the thumbnails to the other categories (not just just the \"sitcky\" part of the homepage?)

I really need to know because I added the thumbnails to the posts but I still can\’t figure out how to make it show up other than on the homepage feature page?

    thanks

  10. Kim says:

    Hi Rhea,
    Thanks for the comment.
I’m going to do a video & post for you on this….I’ll email you when it’s up (I plan to do it today).
    Thanks,
    Kim

  11. Thanks Kim,

I actually figured out how to add the thumbnails from your previous videos on this. All I had to do was cut off the URL and only include the rest of the URL starting from “wp-content…” – why is that?

Strange but now I can see the thumbnail photos on the categories. I hate that it doesn’t automatically do this like my Thesis theme but oh well.

What I really want to know is this:

1.) what do you use to create such Awesome videos???? – I use Camtasia and the files end up being HUGE. Then I have to sacrifice the quality when I upload them to YouTube (sucks)

2.) In the New Magazine Theme, If I wanted to use the “tabs” offered, how to I control how many tabs I can use? The Theme Options only allow 6 but what if you wanted only 3?

  12. Kim says:

    Hi Rhea,
Got your email too. Glad you figured it out….
I’m going to send you an email so we can set up a time to chat. :-)
    Thanks,
    Kim

  14. Bon says:

Whenever I use these WordPress themes I can never get PARAGRAPHS to show on the Main Home Page. On the actual post the paragrpahs show normally, but on the index the text just runs.

How do I get paragraphs to show on the home page, ?

Thanks… Your site is great ! Excellent info.

  15. Kim says:

    Hi Bon,
Can you send me your link so I can look at your site? Are you referring to the excerpts that show on the home page? I’m assuming that you want the full post to appear as opposed to just an excerpt?
    Thanks,
    Kim

Thank you so much for posting this! It was one of the first links I found, and it answered the question quickly and simply. In 10 seconds, I had my first thumbnail on my homepage.
