StudioPress customization tip! [video]

Everyone knows how much I love using StudioPress themes. Every now and then I get a client or subscriber asking how to change out certain aspects of their theme. Recently I had a client ask me how to change out the color of the headline that appears in the widgets and featured content boxes of the StudioPress Lifestyle theme. Because she wasn’t sure if the change was going to be what she wanted permanently, she asked if I could explain how to change or customize this one aspect of her theme. SO…I made a video showing exactly how to do this.

If you’re not using the Lifestyle theme, you’ll still get a good understanding of how to customize different aspects of the theme. In the video I also recommended a tool that is a Firefox add-on called Firebug. This is a great tool to use if you’re going to be doing ANY customizing….even if you’re just going to do your own site. It will save you a TON of time! After watching the video, you can find Firebug here.

Can I ask a question about the Lifestyle theme? There’s a pink .gif in the header and for the life of me I can’t work out what to do with it. I hope you can explain without taking too much of your time

  6. Kim says:

    Hi Susanna,
No problem. Who are you hosting with? That will make the instructions easier in terms of how I tell you how to delete the image. The pink image is just sort of a place holder to show you where you would put a 468×60 ad in your header. You don’t need it.
Just send me an email telling me where you’re hosting your site (do you have cpanel?).
    Thanks,
    Kim

Thanks. I can access my server alright. I guess I will have to make a banner to replace the gif. BTW, your explanations, tutes etc are the clearest I have ever seen and I’m thrilled I found your site.

  8. Kim says:

    Thanks so much Susanna,
it’s much appreciated! Unless you want a banner in your header- you can just delete that image (then later if you change your mind, just add it back in- as long as you don’t change the css). In your hosting acct., it should be under wp-content, themes, lifestyle, images.
    Thanks,
    Kim

Thanks for all the helpful hints. I’m working on customizing a StudioPress theme and am wondering what is the benefit to using a graphic in the headline or navbar vs just removing the graphic and changing the color value? Thanks.

  12. Kim says:

The benefit is visual. Using the navbar, you need to keep the image titled navbar (or whatever the nav image is titled)- so you’re not going to get any benefit from that name (seo). Same for the headline- it’s just visual.
    Hope that helps,
    Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the reply! I’m not sure I understand. If I take the style sheet and just remove the url portion of the the background line so I can just change the color value and I loosing anything visually?

    Start with:
    background: #663399 url(images/headline.png);

    Change to:
    background: #663399;

If the headline graphic is only a box with the same color in it I don’t see how it changes visually.

    Thanks.

  14. Kim says:

    Hi again,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you- have been out of town.
How it changes things visually is that you can use a graphic for that image (with a gradient or stripes or something…..even an image. But you may have to change the width of the image if you want something a little more graphically interesting beyond a gradient or something). Make sense?

You’re correct though that you just remove the url(images/headline.png) if you just want a color.
    Hope that helps!

    Hi,
I\’m using the magazine theme, but only want three tabs to show. How to delete/hide the rest?

  16. Kim says:

    Hi Lis,
Since the tabs are your pages- you can either have only the home page and two additional pages…. OR… use the pagemash plugin which allows you to hide pages from your navigation.
I did a post on this a while back:

    Hope that helps!
