Change your Favicon [video]
This is a question I get a lot with my clients….”will you change the little image next to the website link to match the site?” And of course this is always an automatic part of the process, but it’s just not always the first part of the process.
I usually do it once the rest of the theme is changed out/header is done, etc.
So I thought it would be helpful to show everyone who takes on their theme themselves….how to change your favicon! One other little interesting fact I’ve also recently learned (in doing the SEO webinar with David last month) was that the search engines actually look for the favicon when searching your site (ever notice that some sites will just have a blank image? Kind of looks like a small mini white piece of paper). Not sure what the benefit of it is since it’s named favicon (in most themes….although I’m sure you could rename the image and the image in the code to a more seo friendly title….and if someone has more info. on this, please feel free to correct me here or share some more).
The other benefit of this though goes beyond the simple visual side of things…yes it looks better…..but it’s also helping to BRAND your site! I’ve been doing a little more research and have been learning a little more about branding…(which I won’t share here, maybe in another post) and think that anytime you can do something to reiterate your brand or share your brand, you should (not in a cheesy way of course!
).
Anyways, here’s a video showing you how to change your favicon! Enjoy…and please feel free to retweet or leave a comment!
Thanks!
Here’s the link to the site where you can upload your image to create the favicon.ico:

Cool, that was pretty easy. Thanks.
Thanks for the comment,
Glad it helped!

Kim, how do I do this with a WordPress site that is NOT self-hosted? Thanks!
Hi Larry,
Great question! I haven’t done much with WordPress.com sites in a long time- so I dug around and found a solution for you!
Here’s what I found:
http://absolutely2nothing.wordpress.com/2009/06/01/adding-a-favicon-to-your-wordpress-com-blog/
It looks like it works pretty good as this site is using a favicon (or blavatar as it’s called).
Hope it works.
Thanks,
Kim
Very interesting video. While favicons are definitely not the most important aspect of a site, they do add something nice which users can pick up on, and as you stated, they can reinforce the brand. Thanks for the post.
cool tool, thanks for the share. I agree that favicons are not most important but it sure adds little extra that can give that push, especially within overcrowded bookmarks. With little seo ALT and name it might even bring visits from SE.
